Free media needs moderation
The controversy over the alleged ban on some websites in some Gulf states is growing.
Free dissemination of information needs some controls to maintain social order, peace and national unity.
Regional newspapers and other mainstream media institutions criticising these Internet curbs should look inwards and clean up their act first.
People living in glass houses should not throw stones.
There are newspapers in the Gulf region where dissenting or whistle-blowing expatriate journalists, especially those from South Asia, are victimised by coteries and vested interests.
A few journalist friends of mine have told me that his immediate supervisors harassed them for voicing their free opinions to superior authorities.
That is the real state of free media!
Newspapers and commerical websites, rightly or wrongly, enforce internal controls on freedom of expression among journalists to maintain order. Dissenting voices are silenced through unethical means or bullying tactics.
So is it not hypocritical for the mainstream media to criticise these Internet curbs?
